Hiroshima, Honolulu's Sister City

Some readers will instantly understand the bonds between these two cities, who have been sister cities since June 15, 1959.

Honolulu is the site of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 and Hiroshima is the site of the first atomic bomb dropped on August 6, 1945.   The first brought the United States into World War II and the second, along with a second atomic attack on Nagasaki, forced the surrender of the Japanese to end the war.

More than the horrors of war and strong desire for world peace binds the cities, however.  During the late 19th century and into the 20th century, Japanese laborers were contracted to work on Hawaii's sugar plantations.  Many decided to stay on in the islands rather than return to Japan.  Some of them were from Hiroshima.
